How Would You Use this Technology?

While I am at the Social Studies Conference, here is your brief assignment.

There are 2 Animoto videos below.  Watch both of them - they are quite short - and think about how you might use this technology in your classroom.  To learn more about Animoto, go to http://animoto.com/.

Please consider the following:
  • Content area and grade level of your students
  • Who is making the video?  The teacher to demonstrate something to the students or the students to present their learning?
  • Why are they making the video?
  • What are the students learning?

Video #1 - Who am I?
As part of the non-fiction biography unit (Language Arts), 5th grade students will research a scientist or inventor (Science) and create a brief video biography.

Create your own video slideshow at animoto.com.

Video #2 - Carl Sandburg Home

After a field trip to the Sandburg home in FlLat Rock, NC 4th grade students will demonstrate what they learned.  Students will use photographs that they took, archive photos and will write a short poem.  This assignment combines Social Studies (famous North Carolinians), Language Arts (poetry), Science (animal behavior), Computer Technology (making the video) and Art (photography).

Create your own video slideshow at animoto.com.

Post your idea about integrating this technology in the comments below.  Please sign your comment as this is a graded assignment (10 points).  It is due by Sunday evening (2/27) at 11:55 pm.

You will not see other comments until I make them visible.

  1. This technology is actually really cool. I have never heard of it before this assignment was given to us. These videos remind me of those political commercials where one party finds all the dirt they can on the other party and puts it on the air. This technology is easy to use and fun for students to fiddle around with. It teaches them how to use the technologies we have so abundantly available to us today. I would like to integrate this into my hostory classroom as a class project as was done above. I would probably have students to a biography or summarize a series of events such as WWII or the Cold War. I could also myself use this. I could introduce a unit with this technology or even make an entire lecture out of it.

  2. I really like the idea of using animota in the classroom. I feel it is a fresh, fun new technology that would really allow students to be creative, while still learning.

In a fourth grade English setting I would create my own animota to introduce a poetry segment. I would include information on a certain famous poet. After, students could research and study their own chosen poet, and work to create an animota that presents that poet's work and background information.

By doing this project, students would be able to tackle the fourth grade English Language Arts NC Course of Study as well as gaining presentation and creative new learning skills.

  3. These videos were made for students in grade levels 4 and 5. The videos had many photographs of the field trip and of the invetors the students will research. I feel creating slideshows like this is a great way to keep students interested in learning because the graphics are top knotch and the information they can take will help the students learn. One thing i would change about the slideshows is the timing. I feel if the students could see each picture or text for a little longer it would be more efficient.

I loved the animoto videos because while they are short they really tell a lot about what the child has learned. The first one was very creative and if students got that creative about their school projects then they would have a blast! The second video was interesting and showed how much the student learned also. I think animoto videos are great if the child gets creative with it and has fun too. I think if children had an opportunity to make an animoto video then they would put more effort into it and really have fun with it. The students would have to really listen and learn to make a video like this too. They would learn about the subject they are making a video about, and the technology (animoto). Animoto is terrific technology to use in the classroom!

  5. I would use this for higher grade level students, like middle school, because it is sophisticated technology. I would want my students to use this for an assignment that they needed to present to the class. I would like it for a social studies project. The students could pick a President to research and present the gathered information to the class. The students could learn background information about the former leaders of our Country.

  6. I think you could use this technology in the classroom in any subject. The student could take photos of pretty much anything and create a video about it. I would use it in all subjects toward the end of the year, after the students had learned all they need to learn. They could pick a subject and make one.

  7. This form of technology is pretty amusing. I can see this type of technology being very successful with student learning. This technology allows you to involve any music with pictures of the topic. It is a more exciting way to teaching. Like involving music, pictures, transitions and text. I would use this technology in the classroom to tech a topic that is not as broad to make it more interesting.

  8. I feel like this techonology could be useful for making a video in social studies class or science class to explain a quiick idea. It would be cool if a teacher integrated this into a powerpoint project.

To use this technology for my students I would have them make a video explaining a sport, or showing how to do a certain activity, or a simple workout. Making short informational video's would be very useful for high school physical education students. They could demonstrate certain activities and present their ideas in a short clip that gets the point across. The students would be learning how to do the exercise because they have to have the knowledge of it to teach it, they would be making the video to understand in depth about the exercise and to teach other about it.

  10. I think that I would like using animoto in the classroom. I think it would be good for older students to use. I would use it for an algebra class for 9-12 grade. I would use it in a way that the students would create an animoto as way to give a presentation on what they have learned. The students would be making a presentation on the different steps to solving a problem, making examples, and also the history of mathematics showing them how use it in real life situation.

  11. The First video titled "Who Am I?" could be used in the form of an interactive quiz. Rather then having a sheet of paper with multiple choices for an answer, students will have a clicker and all watch the same video, selecting who they believe the person is from a list if people given after the video concludes. This will keep the students more involved and interested in the material.

The second video titled "Carl Sanburg Home, appears to be similar to a power point presentation. I could use this in my classroom after having a field trip. I would previously inform the students of the upcoming assignment, and allow them to take pictures on the trip, which will then be shown through a video to myself and their peers.

  12. I think that incorporating technology into the classroom is a very smart thing. I think it helps children be more hands on while learning and it also helps the learning experience more fun and more of an adventure than just sitting in the classroom and listening to a teacher.

  13. This new technology causes students to be involved in their learning. They are made to be interactive, while still be having fun. I would assign my students to groups and assign them a topic to create a video on. This way they would have to conduct their own research, gather information and incorporate it into the video.

  14. I think both of these videos are a great way to work on a project while using technology. They both involve the students to research a topic and create images and sound to showcase their final work. As a future ESL teacher, this would be a fantastic way to help learn English. They would be able to convey an idea through this form of media which could be much easier than giving a presentation. By intergrating this technology students are able to learn a number of interesting things, like Carl Sandberg, and put a twist onto it by creating their own poem. I really think both of these video ideas could be very useful in an ESL classroom.

  15. I want to teach high school math or science. High school science students could use this technology to present a certain section of material. They would learn more about the section by doing the project and other classmates would learn about section through a visual aid. Visuals normally help students to learn better than just reading slides or a book.

  16. I think that this technology is great. I say this because the students can show what they have learned or did there project on without having to talk or explain. The project isn't easy, but it is simple.

p.s I already did this, but moodle says i didn't.

  17. If I were to use this in a classroom I would this to be a end of the year project where I would have the students pick a certain topic, person, or place on any subject covered and let there creativity flow and really show me what they've learned over the course of the year.

  18. This technology is a great and a fun way for your students to learn. I would use this in my 3rd grade class to introduce new lessons. I believe the children would find Animoto very interesting and I believe it would get them excited to learn new things. Using Animoto to introduce new lessons would give the students an idea on what to expect from the lessons and would be a great Ice Breaker.
